2009 Geneva Auto Show Infiniti Essence Concept

Switzerland may not be home to major automotive manufacturers, but it's centrally located in Europe, and you're never quite sure what types of cars will be on display at the Geneva Motor Show. One thing is for sure, however: There are always a host of wild concept cars on display, many of which stretch the imagination while ignoring any potential for production. In short, these Extreme Concepts are lots of fun, and here are five of our favorites.

Infiniti Essence Concept

A 2-seat luxury coupe with curvy almost Maserati-like styling, the Infiniti Essence celebrates the company's 20 years in existence by looking back into its history of making high-performance cars — while also looking ahead at future 21st century motoring. To that end, the rear-drive Essence is a gas/electric hybrid that combines a twin-turbo 3.7-liter V-6 with an electric motor, the combined peak output said to be 600 horsepower. Although the battery pack takes up much trunk space, special Louis Vuitton luggage fits in the back of the Essence perfectly.

Zagato Perana Z-One

The Zagato Perana Z-One is one Geneva concept that will actually see production, although fewer than 1000 will be built. We like the Zagato styling of this 2-seater, which has pontoon fenders and a signature double-bubble roof. But we like this car's engine even more. It's a Corvette LS3 V-8, a 6.2 -liter that puts out 435 horsepower and enables the Z-One to hit 60 mph in about 4 seconds. Perana is a South African specialty car maker, and the Z-One is expected to cost a bit more than $100,000.
