iPhone, BlackBerry, Razr Most Popular Phones in '09

BUYING GUIDE.

Apple's iPhone was the most popular U.S. mobile device in 2009, followed by the BlackBerry 8300 series, but despite all the new smartphones flooding the market, Motorola's trusty Razr flip-phone was still the third most-popular phone of the year.

The Apple iPhone 3G captured 4 percent of the embedded base of all mobile subscribers, followed by Research in Motion's BlackBerry 8300 (Curve) series with 3.7 percent, and the Razr V3 series with 2.3 percent, according to Monday data from Nielsen.

Two LG phones – the LG VX9100 enV2 and the LG Voyager – rounded out the top five, with 2.1 percent and 1.7 percent of the market, respectively. Also in the top 10 were the Samsung Rant, the BlackBerry 9530 series (Storm) , the LG Dare, the LG Vu series, and the BlackBerry 8100 series (Pearl) , which had between 1.5 percent and 1.2 percent.

Nielsen also looked at the top sites accessed on the mobile Web, and Google Search, Yahoo, and Gmail made the top three. Rounding out the top 10 were the Weather Channel, Facebook, Hotmail, Google Maps, ESPN, AOL Mail, and CNN News.

Among the top 10 brands accessed on mobile phones, Yahoo, Google, and Windows Live/Bing/MSN topped the list. Among video channels, meanwhile, YouTube, Fox Interactive Media (which includes MySpace), and the Weather Channel were in the top three, followed by Comedy Central, CBS, ABC, MTV, NBC, ESPN, and the E! Channel.

In other Nielsen mobile phone news, the company found that one in five U.S. households now relies solely on their mobile phone for phone service. While most people still maintain a landline at home, the number of people using only cell phones is up 16 percent from last year.
