BUYING GUIDE.
According to reports, executives who saw the first edit of director Guy Ritchie’s latest movie complained that it was lacking a villain and requested that Pitt be signed up to play Moriarty, Holmes’ arch-enemy.However, a studio spokesman insisted: “Brad Pitt is not joining the cast of Sherlock Holmes and we’re extremely pleased with the production of the film.
"In order to complete the movie, we’ve scheduled a few days on set to shoot a couple of additional scenes, obtain pick-up shots, and perfect some of the visual effects elements, all of which is standard film-making practice.”
Law and Downey Jr were pictured on set in London, where they were joined by co-star Rachel McAdams.
American actor Downey Jr plays Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s super-sleuth and Law is his sidekick, Dr Watson.
Ritchie, director of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, has given the story a 21st century update with an emphasis on action sequences. However, Downey Jr said there was also “a lot of humour” in the film. “Guy really knows how to tell a story. He’s done complex storytelling very well and he’s got a great visual sense.”
The actor spent months researching the character and reading all of Conan Doyle’s tales. “There are literally trillions of pages of text and information about that character. He’s one of the most recognisable images and names in the history of mankind,” Downey Jr said.
The film is due for release on Christmas Day. A rival Sherlock Holmes movie - this time a comedy starring Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell - has also been announced, produced by Judd Apatow.
